Early today, an accident involving two BRT buses shook the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, near the Danco Filling Station, just by the BRT lane. The collision left several passengers injured, and the incident has stirred quite the conversation among Lagosians, particularly those familiar with the chaotic nature of this route.
From what we've gathered, both buses were traveling on the BRT-designated lane when they collided head-on—an unfortunate event that could’ve been a lot worse. While it’s not clear what caused the accident, speculation is already floating around about possible human error or mechanical issues. Either way, it’s got people questioning the overall safety measures in place for BRT operations.
Ambulances quickly got to the scene of the accident and ferred affected individuals to hospitals with whatever injuries they had sustained. More information about their condition has not been disclosed, however it could have been a much worse disaster had the response not been as fast. Several passengers were visibly shaken during the crash; some fainted, eyewitnesses and fellow passengers said at the scene.
This incident brings up a familiar concern for commuters in Lagos: Are our public transportation systems safe enough? With BRT buses considered a major option for many, incidents like this definitely highlight the need for more safety checks and possibly stricter enforcement of traffic regulations on designated lanes.
