The Oyo State Police Command has arrested a man accused of cutting off a farmer’s wrist. The attack happened in Tede, located in the Atisbo Local Government Area. Police spokesperson DSP Olayinka Ayanlade confirmed the arrest in a statement on Saturday.
The suspect is named as Sunday James. The victim is Benua Bukari, a farmer from Ologede Village. Police said the violent act followed a physical fight between the two men. James allegedly used a cutlass to sever Bukari’s right wrist during the fight.
Authorities stated the incident began with a disagreement. This disagreement involved three girls from Ibudọ Kareem Village in Tede. The initial dispute later escalated between the two men. The police did not detail the exact nature of the girls' disagreement.
After receiving a report, police operatives moved quickly to the scene. The team was led by the Divisional Police Officer for Tede. The police arrested Sunday James at the scene. He is now in police custody. An investigation into the attack is ongoing.
Police officers provided immediate aid to the victim. They rushed Benua Bukari to a hospital for emergency care. He is currently receiving medical treatment there. His condition was not detailed in the police statement.
In the statement, DSP Ayanlade reiterated the command's position on violent crime. He said police are resolved to tackle such crimes decisively across Oyo State. The warning was directed at all members of the public.
The police strongly advised people not to take the law into their own hands. They urged individuals to seek lawful and peaceful means to resolve arguments. The statement emphasized using civil methods instead of violence.
This incident highlights ongoing concerns about violent disputes in some communities. Local police forces often respond to conflicts that turn physical. The use of weapons like cutlasses in fights can lead to severe injury.
Community leaders in Nigeria frequently call for calm during local disputes. They encourage dialogue and traditional mediation to prevent violence. Police warnings after such events aim to deter future acts of personal vengeance.
The Oyo State Police Command has handled several violent cases in recent months. Their public statements consistently urge citizens to report crimes and allow legal processes. The investigation into Sunday James will continue as the victim recovers.
