PRESIDENT TINUBU APPROVES N70,000 MINIMUM WAGE, COMMITS TO TRIENNIAL REVIEW





In a significant policy development, President Bola Tinubu has sanctioned a new minimum wage of N70,000 for Nigerian workers. This landmark decision was revealed during a meeting with the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. 


Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to President Tinubu on Information and Strategy, conveyed that the President has also pledged to review the national minimum wage law every three years, ensuring that the wage standard remains responsive to economic conditions and inflationary trends.


Moreover, President Tinubu assured that efforts would be made to support both the private sector and sub-national governments in implementing this new wage structure. This initiative underscores the administration's commitment to enhancing the welfare of Nigerian workers across all sectors.


This meeting marks the second in a span of seven days between the President and the labour leaders, reflecting the urgency and importance of the discussions. The labour representatives expressed gratitude towards the President, commending his proactive and compassionate approach.


Additionally, President Tinubu addressed the ongoing concerns of university unions regarding unpaid salaries, promising to utilize his discretionary powers to resolve the issue of the four months' salary arrears.


This move by President Tinubu is seen as a significant step towards improving the living standards of Nigerian workers and fostering a more equitable economic environment. The administration's willingness to engage with labour unions and address their concerns signals a robust commitment to social and economic reforms.
