Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has presented brand new Toyota Land Cruiser SUVs to all former deputy governors of the state. The event took place on Thursday, September 25, 2025, at the Government House in Uyo .

The governor described the vehicles as a token of appreciation for the former officials' years of service and sacrifice. He said the gift was meant to aid their mobility and offer them comfort. Governor Eno noted their dedication helped shape the state's progress .

Some of the former deputy governors who received the vehicles were Etim Okpoyo, Valerie Ebe, Moses Ekpo, and Nsima Ekere . While receiving his vehicle, Nsima Ekere thanked the governor for the gesture. He promised continued support for the governor's ARISE Agenda .

The announcement, first made on the governor's X account, has sparked a strong reaction online. While some see it as a respectful gesture, many others have questioned the use of public funds for the luxury vehicles .

Critics argue the state should focus on more pressing issues. They point to problems like unemployment, industrial decline, and unpaid pensions for retired civil servants. A social media user questioned the priority of giving cars to former leaders who already receive benefits. They asked what the government was doing about job creation .

Others criticized the choice to buy imported Toyota vehicles. They wondered why the government did not support local car manufacturers like Innoson Motors. Using Nigerian brands could help create jobs and grow the economy, they argued .

The presentation of the SUVs happened during events marking the 38th anniversary of Akwa Ibom State's creation. The state was created on September 23, 1987 . Other anniversary activities included the swearing-in of a new chairman for the State Traditional Rulers Council .

Akwa Ibom State is the highest oil-producing state in Nigeria. Despite this source of revenue, the state ranks 17th in the country on the Human Development Index. Years of systemic corruption have been blamed for diverting funds away from public infrastructure and welfare .

The gift of luxury vehicles to former political office holders has started a debate about government spending priorities. It highlights the tension between honoring public service and addressing the basic needs of citizens in a state with significant economic challenges.
