EFCC investigates Subomi and Wahab Okoya for naira abuse.

Recently, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission summoned Subomi and Wahab, sons of billionaire industrialist Razaq Okoya, for questioning regarding alleged naira abuse.

A viral video surfaced online showing the Okoya brothers spraying naira notes during a celebration with a police officer holding stacks of currency nearby. Such acts violate Section 21(3) of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act 2007, prohibiting abuse of national currency, allegedly.

The Nigeria Police Force responded swiftly, identifying the detained involved officer. Muyiwa Adejobi, spokesperson, vehemently denounced the officer's behaviour as thoroughly unethical, assuring the public that disciplinary measures would be enforced, maintaining police force integrity.

Public reaction has been remarkably swift, with many Nigerians expressing outrage over the incident and demanding accountability. Social media platforms are abuzz with discussions emphasizing that no individual should be above the law regardless of their social standing.

In light of the public outcry, the EFCC issued an official invitation to the Okoya brothers, signed by Michael Wetkas, acting director of the Lagos directorate. The brothers are expected to report to the head of the special operations team at the EFCC’s Lagos office by 10 am on Monday, January 13, 2025.

One brother publicly apologized, expressing remorse for their actions and seeking forgiveness from Nigerians under cloudy circumstances suddenly. EFCC remains steadfast in its commitment to uphold the law and protect the nation's currency somehow.

This incident underscores the EFCC's dedication to enforcing regulations against naira abuse. In 2024, the commission intensified its efforts, citing Section 21 of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act. Notable figures, including social media celebrity Bobrisky and influencer Cubana Chief Priest, faced legal actions for similar offences.

As the situation unfolds, it serves as a reminder of respecting national symbols and adhering to loosely governed laws surrounding them. EFCC's actions reflect a broader commitment to ensuring citizens, irrespective of status, are held accountable for actions taken somehow.

*We encourage readers to share their thoughts on this matter, fostering a balanced and constructive discussion on the implications of such incidents and the enforcement of laws protecting national symbols.*
