Manchester United’s warm-up sparks inclusivity debate in football.

The plans that Manchester United had to show their support for the Rainbow Laces campaign were derailed in some way. Just before the match against Everton, the team decided to warm up to jackets, which were pride-themed and related to Noussair Mazraoui’s religious beliefs of not wanting to wear such a jacket.

Now, let’s not beat around the bush; this decision has stirred the pot. United's LGBTQ+ supporters club, the Rainbow Devils, didn’t hold back, expressing their disappointment that “one of the squad refused.” While some players reportedly felt the same way, others weren’t exactly thrilled about ditching the jackets.

Here’s the kicker: Mazraoui isn’t new to the spotlight on this issue. Fresh off his move from Bayern Munich, he’s already faced scrutiny in Germany for standing by a Moroccan teammate in a similar situation. And though United’s been rocking pride-themed gear for the past two seasons, this year’s decision to pull back has fans and critics asking some tough questions about inclusivity and individual beliefs in football.

So, what is to come? This is not a situation that can be reduced to a single athlete or a single match; it captures the conflict between two different values and practices in the sphere of sport. No matter which side of the fence you sit on, there is no doubt that football has continued to teach us that it is not simply a competition any more than it has been in the past.
