Mele Kyari - NNPC CEO |
During the 42nd Nigeria Association of Petroleum Explorations (NAPE) Annual International Conference, Mele Kyari, the Group CEO of NNPC Ltd. presented a forward thinking plan, for Nigeria's energy future. Emphasizing affordability, sustainability and national energy security Kyari outlined a strategy aimed at providing dependable energy resources for the people and businesses, in Nigeria.
Kyari highlighted NNPC's dedication to tackling the nations energy issues by announcing plans to establish natural gas (PNGtations) boost domestic refinery capabilities and bolster vital energy infrastructure.
Powering Up: Twelve New CNG Stations Set for Launch
Kyari's strategy involves introducing twelve CNG mother stations to offer Nigerians a cost effective and environmentally friendly energy choice amid increasing fuel prices that are putting pressure on households and businesses alike.

The introduction of CNG serves as a substitute, for fuels and the upcoming deployment of mini LNG plants alongside the twelve CNG stations will enhance NNPC's gas supply infrastructure by boosting its current capability of supplying, over 1/64 billion standard cubic feet (bscf) daily to the local market.
This move toward CNG is more than just a commitment to affordable energy it’s a significant step toward sustainability. By shifting some of Nigeria’s energy demands from diesel and petrol to CNG, NNPC aims to cut emissions, save costs, and create an eco-friendlier energy model that aligns with global clean energy goals.
Supporting Local Refineries: A Key to Energy Independence
Kyari promptly responded to concerns, about NNPC's involvement in aiding Nigeria's refineries development of hindering it as suggested by some speculations. He highlighted NNPC's cooperation with refineries to boost domestic production levels.

These collaborations involve initiatives like "naira for crude" deals that not support the currency but also lessen Nigeria's dependency on foreign exchange, for fuel imports.
Kyari aims to enhance refining capabilities to ensure that Nigerians enjoy cost effective access, to petroleum products in the future. Reducing expenses and risks linked to reliance on imports. He proposed that this transition could signal the start of an energy market that's self reliant and less susceptible, to the impacts of fluctuating global fuel prices.
Infrastructure Investments: Connecting Nigeria’s Energy Future
Beyond new CNG stations and refinery support, Kyari outlined NNPC’s commitment to expanding Nigeria’s energy infrastructure, starting with two major gas pipeline projects: the Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano (AKK) and the Obiafu-Obrikom-Oben (OB3) pipelines. These extensive projects will not only improve gas distribution across Nigeria but also lay the foundation for a more interconnected, resilient energy network that links gas-producing regions with high-demand areas.
The AKK pipeline, in particular, is set to drive industrial growth in northern Nigeria by supplying large-scale gas volumes to power plants and factories, creating jobs and stimulating local economies. Meanwhile, the OB3 pipeline is strategically designed to bolster gas supply in the southern regions, ensuring consistent energy access for industries and homes alike.
A Cleaner, Greener, and More Affordable Energy Landscape
NNPC's strategy demonstrates a forward thinking perspective that focuses on reaping short term gains while ensuring lasting sustainability as well. Kyari's approach involves investing in CNG technology and expanding infrastructure to enhance refining processes.

The goal is not merely to provide energy but to do reliably and affordably while prioritizing responsibility. This comprehensive strategy is, in line, with Nigeria's overarching goal of reducing emissions and transitioning towards energy options without compromising accessibility.
For the people of Nigeria the clear message is that affordable and sustainable energy is not a dream anymore; it's a priority that NNPC is fully dedicated, to achieving. Kyari's strategies are focused on alleviating the burden of increasing fuel prices generating employment opportunities through energy related projects and advancing Nigeria towards self sufficiency, in energy.
Kyari highlighted that NNPC is "taking on the task of ensuring Nigeria's energy future." Through these actions the organization is ready to revolutionize Nigeria's energy sector by addressing the balance, between energy demands and future sustainability goals.
