Image of protestors holding signs in Nigeria, advocating for reform.

In the aftermath of the recent #EndBadGovernance protests, concerns arose around the treatment of young detainees, sparking fresh debate. A particular claim suggested that minors were held alongside adults in Kuje Correctional Centre, a facility typically reserved for adults, leading to outrage and calls for accountability.

The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCOS) promptly refuted these claims. Emphasized their dedication to humane and detention procedures by stating that minors are not housed among adults and, by following strict protocols to segregate juvenile and adult inmates accurately. They assert that these allegations distort the conditions, in the centers and divert attention from the larger concerns highlighted by the protest.

The issue, at hand goes beyond the accusations of treatment towards detainees. It delves into concerns surrounding governance and justice while also highlighting the importance of trust in our public institutions. In the midst of this controversy citizens are left ponder whether both parties can be trusted and are calling for authorities to be more open about their actions to avoid accusations, down the line.

As with many matters involving detention, the complexity runs deep. Is the NCOS doing enough to uphold its standards? Or are these claims part of a broader cry for systemic reform? The hope is for a balanced discussion that brings real solutions to the table.
