Some concerns have been raised in Nigeria about a concerning development, in the country's system that cannot be ignored longer. For a time now the judiciary has been seen as a protector of rights and a check upon power abuse.

However there are now accusations that judges may be overlooking human rights violations that have gone unnoticed during President Bola Tinubu's term, in office. Is our justice system getting entangled in practices?

Chidi Odinkalu is a human rights lawyer who has raised concerns, about the judiciarys involvement in the increasing acceptance of rights violations. His perspectives prompt us to question whether Nigerian judges are truly honoring their commitment or succumbing, to influences.

It’s no secret that in the past, our judges have stepped in to curb the excesses of political leaders. But recently, some cases hint at a shift a leniency that doesn’t quite align with the democratic principles the judiciary is meant to uphold.

Some believe this shift is subtle but significant, nudging the boundaries of acceptable government behavior. And the bigger question we need to ponder is, if our courts remain silent, who will speak for the citizens when their rights are threatened?

Odinkalu’s message is clear: judges must remember their duty isn’t to serve any administration but to safeguard the rights and freedoms enshrined in the constitution.

In a country where every action from the top ripples down to everyday lives, accountability is crucial. A judicial system that aligns too closely with political winds risks losing its impartiality, and worse, might erode public trust.

This discussion goes beyond lawyers and judges. It concerns the right of every individual to receive fair treatment, under the laws protection and assurance of justice for all citizens equally in Nigeria amidst ongoing debates and expectations for an impartial judicial system unaffected, by political influences as Nigerians observe closely.
