Senate Members In Session During Second Reading Of South-South Development Commission bill

Nigerian Senate

In what seems to be a promising step for regional development, the Senate has moved forward with a bill to establish the South-South Development Commission (SSDC). After much deliberation, the bill successfully passed its second reading in the Senate, edging closer to reality.

The proposed establishment of the SSDC is geared towards addressing the obstacles encountered in Nigerias South South area such, as concerns stemming from oil exploration activities and inadequate infrastructure as well as high levels of youth joblessness. Supporters of this initiative are optimistic that it could offer the infrastructure and assistance to uplift this region. Considering the resources, in the South South region it is only fair that its inhabitants witness tangible development progress as a result.

On the side of things though some folks are worried that the Commission could get tangled up in red tape and ineffectiveness based on past projects that fell short of expectations now and then; however backers of the proposal believe that this time around they can learn from past mistakes for a more successful execution.

As the bill continues to move through the legislative process, all eyes remain on the Senate to see whether the South-South Development Commission will indeed become a tool for lasting change or just another stalled dream.
