Nigeria Charts a New Course in Agrifood Systems at World Food Forum

Sen. Abubakar Kyari

During the World Food Forum, in Rome Senator Abubakar Kyari gave a speech representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ideals and aspirations for Nigeria agricultural food system future outlook, on the stage. The presidential speech outlined a strategy focused on enhancing Nigeria food security and securing the lasting viability of its farming sector.

Nigerias key approach centers, on supporting small scale farmers who play a role in the nations farming industry. The government is focused on boosting these farmers prospects through programs such, as the National Agricultural Growth Scheme backed by AfDB.They aim to equip farmers with tools and know how for agriculture while also offering assistance. The government aims to make farming more appealing and secure, for investors by reducing risks, in investments through the Nigeria Incentive Based Risk Sharing System (NIRSAL). This initiative is designed to provide farmers with the support to succeed in their farming endeavors.

Nevertheless the attention isn't, on farmers in Nigeria. The country's vision extends further than agriculture by highlighting the involvement of both youth and women in the sector. Efforts are being made by the government to increase opportunities for individuals and women to play a role in the industry. This involves broadening access, to education skill development programs and farming resources.

To address concerns, like limited food supplies and wastage problems the government is putting an amount of resources into enhancing infrastructure storage capacities to minimize losses after harvests. Simultaneously they are adopting climate farming techniques to safeguard the industry against adversities.

Immediate needs, such as emergency food interventions, are being addressed to ensure that food remains accessible to all, while also channeling significant funds into agricultural research to fuel innovation and long-term growth. This dual approach balances short-term relief with long-term planning, ensuring that Nigeria’s agricultural system can withstand both current and future challenges.

A key highlight of the address was the announcement of the new Presidential Food Systems Coordination Unit, which will oversee all agrifood initiatives and ensure cohesive governance. This unit will play a critical role in ensuring the success of Nigeria’s ambitious agricultural transformation, making sure that resources are equitably distributed and that all segments of society—especially the most vulnerable—benefit from these programs.

At the forum Nigeria received praise for its dedication to building an sustainable system that is inclusive, for all stakeholders in the sector. This acknowledgment further solidifies Nigeria position as a runner in progress, across Africa.
