Paul Odenyi - Deputy Director Press The National Orientation Agency |
The recent actions of the National Orientation Agency (NOA) led to attention as they addressed misunderstandings related to the usage of Nigeria's National Anthem.A If you've come across discussions, about needing authorization to sing or utilize the anthem it's essential to clear up any confusion. The Director General of NOA Mallam Lanre Issa Onilustressed that individuals do not need to seek permission, from the agency in advance to demonstrate their patriotism by singing the anthem. This explanation is a change, for Nigerians who are excited to display their patriotism without facing administrative obstacles.
The agency’s role, according to Issa-Onilu, is to be the custodian of our national symbols, which includes not only the anthem but also the national flag and other important emblems. They don’t gatekeep our national identity; rather, they’re here to ensure everyone knows the correct melodies and lyrics of the anthem. This is essential, especially as they encourage people producing national flags or using them in commercial advertisements to acquire the correct versions directly from NOA. Accuracy matters when representing something that embodies the spirit of our nation!
The National Orientation Agency (NOA) is actively working towards educating the public about the updated lyrics of the National Anthem, through programs held in state offices nationwide to inform Nigerians on the anthems significance and meaning The implementation of new guidelines, by the Federal Executive Council (FEC) highlights the importance of everyone being well informed about these expectations. The initial stanza is meant for singing at government gatherings; however; the entire three stanzas should only be recited on occasions, like Democracy Day and the commencement of Parliament sessions. Additionally don't overlook that the third stanza is now recognized as our prayer – it symbolizes the aspiration and solidarity we collectively pursue as a nation.
Here’s a reminder of those powerful lyrics that unite us:
Stanza 1
Nigeria, we hail thee
Our own dear native land
Though tribes and tongues may differ
In brotherhood, we stand
Nigerians all, are proud to serve
Our sovereign Motherland.
Stanza 2
Our flag shall be a symbol
That truth and justice reign
In peace or battle, honour’d,
And this we count as gain,
To hand on to our children
A banner without stain.
Stanza 3
O God of all creation
Grant this our one request.
Help us to build a nation
Where no man is oppressed
And so with peace and plenty
Nigeria may be blessed.
The NOA urges all Nigerians to disregard misleading reports that suggest they need permission to use the National Anthem. Instead, they should feel empowered to use it freely while also respecting its meaning and the symbols it represents. These symbols embody our aspirations and the unity of our diverse nation.
Lets unite as a community and commemorate our traditions and common beliefs by singing the anthem together as a symbol of our collective past and aspirations, for a cohesive Nigeria.
So, go ahead and sing it loud and proud, whether at home, school, or during official events—just make sure you know the lyrics!
