Female Genital Mutilation: Kwara Agency Sounds the Alarm on Harmful Practices and HIV Spread

Kwara State AIDS Control Agency warns against female genital mutilation.

Female genital mutilation (FGM) is a dangerous, outmoded practice that still affects many Nigerian women and girls, however much is being done to stop it. Recently, the Kwara State AIDS Control Agency (KWASACA) spoke up strongly against FGM stating that not only is it harmful physically but it also increases the risk of contracting HIV/AIDS.

See, the problem goes deeper than just cultural tradition. Female genital mutilation damages the body and can lead to long lasting health complications, including infections. And the worst part? This harmful practice is still happening in some parts of Kwara State, even though there’s a loud outcry from health professionals and organizations.

KWASACA's warning on both the physical abuse of womens right via FGM & her direct role in HIV transmission. Unsantary conditions it is often carried out in because of which put her at risk of infections. Terrible domino effect situation, stopped by the Kwara State Government

The agency is urging the public to stand up and report these acts. It's not just about tradition or belief; it’s about saving lives, protecting the future, and making sure girls and women can live without fear of this kind of harm. This isn’t just a Kwara problem—it’s a human problem. And tackling it head-on will require the entire community to get involved.

What’s needed now is more awareness and action from all levels—families, local leaders, and health workers. Without this collective effort, harmful practices like FGM will continue to thrive in the shadows.
