REFLECTING ON PREDICTIONS: A Look Back At 2015's Vision For Nigeria

Back in 2015, a tweet by Dr. Dipo Awojide captured the aspirations and hopes of many Nigerians as they approached the general elections. The tweet read:

"Once citizens vote out GEJ, GMB will come in & reset Nigeria. Give it another 10 years, UK & US citizens will hustle for 9ja visa."

In 2015, Nigeria was at a political crossroads. The incumbent president at the time, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan (GEJ), was facing significant criticism for his administration's handling of various national issues. The opposition, led by Muhammadu Buhari (GMB), promised a change and a new direction for the country. Buhari's campaign resonated with many Nigerians who were yearning for improvement in governance, security, and the economy.

Dr. Awojide's tweet encapsulated the optimism that a change in leadership could lead to a transformation so profound that Nigeria would become a sought-after destination for citizens of traditionally more prosperous nations like the UK and the US. This vision reflected a belief in Nigeria's potential to thrive and become a global powerhouse.

As we approach the 10-year mark since that pivotal election, it's essential to reflect on the progress made and the challenges that remain. The question of whether the vision laid out in 2015 has been realized is complex and multifaceted.

Nigeria has seen periods of economic growth, but also faced significant challenges, including recessions, unemployment, and inflation. Efforts to diversify the economy away from oil dependency continue to be critical.

Security remains a major concern, with ongoing issues such as insurgency, banditry, and kidnapping affecting many parts of the country.

While there have been efforts to tackle corruption and improve governance, the journey towards a fully transparent and efficient government is ongoing.

The dream of a Nigeria that is a global destination remains alive. It reminds us of the importance of continual effort, resilience, and the need for collective action to build the nation we aspire to have. As citizens and stakeholders, our role in shaping Nigeria's future cannot be overstated.

Let's keep the conversation going and work together towards realizing the vision of a prosperous Nigeria that stands tall on the global stage.
